Jökulsárlón is the glacial lake that sits at the base of a glacier in the Vatnajökull National Park of Southeastern Iceland.

During our May 2017 trip through Iceland, we stopped at Jökulsárlón after a hiking up a glacier and doing a second hike to see the Skaftafell waterfall in Vatnajökull.

Located about five hours away from Reykjavík, the lagoon that started forming in 1934 features icebergs that break off from the adjacent Breiðamerkurjökull glaciers. Water flows from the lake out into the ocean under a bridge in the Ring Road.

At 248 meters, it is the deepest lake in Iceland has been featured in scenes for "Amazing Race" and several films, including  "Batman Begins," "A View to a Kill," "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and "Die Another Day."

Visitors to the area can see the icebergs in the lake up close by taking a boat tour for about $82 per ticket.

Even without paying for one of the boat tours that cruises through the lake, we were able to get some incredible views of the icebergs that float on the lake while standing on the shore. It was amazing to see the differences in size, color and layering of ash in the various icebergs.

The shores of the lake are the perfect spot for a mid-road trip picnic, or you can dine at the Café by Jökulsárlón, where you can use WiFi and the bathroom.
